Well, it’s been a fun ride, but today is the last of
the regular weekly e-mails.

Some quick wisdom!

I was watching the re-make of “Harvey” with
Harry Anderson from “Night Court” fame last
night. (I still think Timothy Curry or maybe
Christopher Lloyd might have played it a tad
better, but Harry did a decent rendition of
the role made famous by Jimmy Stewart about
a man who claimed to pal around with
an invisible 6 foot plus white rabbit.)

But, there was an interesting line in there
made by his character:

“My mother told me there were two ways to
make it in this world: you can either be real
smart, or you can be real smart. For many
years, I was real smart. I’ve found that
‘pleasant’ is better.”

How many times do we hear of “geniuses”
who are extremely rude? But, we’re told
that we have to “tolerate” them, just because
they’re “talented.”

We can’t do anything about “them.”

But, YOU can do something about YOU.

By the way, my contention here is that
YOU can be both “smart” and
“pleasant.”

If you see that somebody is “wrong”
on something, it is not that you must
correct them, but you must decide
if it is important that they know
the “truth.”

And, if they MUST know the truth,
you can them impart that to them
in a manner that is pleasant.

So, if it is not important, let it go!
(That’s the “being pleasant” part
of it.)

If it is important, then let them
know by saying something like:
“I can understand why you feel
that way, and I know a lot of
people, in the past who have
felt that way. What has been
discovered, though is—”

You’re not attacking them.
You’re letting them know they
are in a group of people. But,
more importantly, they get to
get out of that group without
being put down.

By the way, if you are ever in
a situation where you have
to choose to either be “smart”
or choose to be “pleasant,”

CHOOSE PLEASANT!

Rare occasion.

book, when I know I’m close to
knowing enough to pass, I sit
down a couple of days before
the test, and write down in my
own handwriting:

I, (Brother Paul’s real name), have
passed my (whatever type) test,
and obtained (whatever certification)
license on (the actual day of the test.)

So, for this test, I wrote:

I, (Brother Paul’s real name; {what,
you thought I’d actually tell you})
have passed my (no I’m not telling
you the type of test, either) on
March 17, 2007!

Notice that I’m mentioning a future
event in a past tense as though
it has already happened.

That’s the key. I’ve tricked my brain
into making sure that I’m not a liar. I’ve
told it that I’ve already passed, so in
my mind’s inner workings, it does what
it needs to so that I’m not a liar.

You’d be surprised how many times
and how many ways that little technique
will help you.
